Gilchrist, Healy united in dream XI

A PANEL of experts has found room for Adam Gilchrist as well as Ian Healy in choosing Australian cricket's Test dream team of the past 10 years.

The 10 judges, headed by Dennis Lillee, Greg Chappell and Mark Nicholas, were asked in the latest issue of Inside Cricket magazine to choose their best Australian XI during the decade of dominance starting with the breakthrough victory in the West Indies in 1995.

While debate has long raged over which wicketkeeper would be in such an honorary side out of Healy, the superior gloveman, or Gilchrist, the superior batsman, the dilemma was avoided as the votes of the panel meant that both were included. Gilchrist made the teams of all 10 judges, five times as the sole keeper, five times as a specialist batsman alongside Healy as the gloveman.

"Healy is the best keeper and it's a specialist position," Ian Chappell said. "Plus, he was no slouch as a batsman. Gilchrist is such a devastating batsman that he's ideal for the No.6 slot."

Not surprisingly, former Victorian keeper Darren Berry - a vocal critic of Gilchrist's glovework - included both Gilchrist and Healy.

The other major surprise was the splitting up of Australia's most successful opening partnership - Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer. Only Hayden made the side, as an opener alongside the strongly fancied Mark Taylor, who was captain ahead of Steve Waugh on the strength of five nominations as leader to Waugh's four.

Hayden polled votes from eight judges, with the exception of Ian Chappell and Geoff Lawson, who both opted for Taylor and Michael Slater. Hayden and Langer were the favoured pairing of Lillee, Dean Jones, the ABC's Jim Maxwell and former New Zealand opener Mark Richardson.

The team is: Matthew Hayden, Mark Taylor (c), Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Ian Healy, Shane Warne, Jason Gillespie, Craig McDermott, Glenn McGrath.
