Ambitious Saltires keen on Gilchrist

Source: Scotsman - November 30, 2005

AUSTRALIAN cricket star Adam Gilchrist could be playing for Scottish Saltires next season if an ambitious approach succeeds, it was confirmed today.

Euan McIntyre, general manager of Cricket Scotland, said that a bid for the 34-year-old wicket keeper/batsman had been launched - encouraged by a favourable initial response from a player who can also bowl off-breaks to a high standard.

"During the washed out Scotland-Australia match at citylets Grange this summer Adam was asked if he would be interested in returning here having played for Perthshire when starting out on his career," said McIntyre. "Adam said it was a nice idea and the ball remains in his court."

Scottish officials will shortly step up their bid. "We are in the process of trying to contact Adam's management now in the hope that something can be arranged perhaps with the help of sponsors.

Adam fits the bill as to the type of overseas player we are keen to attract (two are allowed in next summer's C&G Trophy) both because of his abilities and his willingness to promote the game.

"There is a gap in the Australian's schedule next summer and we hope the chance to re-visit Scotland might appeal to Adam especially as it could be coupled with the majority of the nine-match C&G campaign," added McIntyre.

The Saltires' standards have already been set by the signing of new Indian captain Rahul Dravid a few years ago. McIntyre feels that only the second 'keeper to captain Australia in Tests would be a notable successor to Dravid, while still keeping their options open.

Suggesting there may be more surprises to come, he added: "We have spoken to one or two players about turning out for the Saltires."

Meanwhile, Cricket Scotland has revealed a surplus of £15,958, compared to a loss of £38,000 the previous year.
