Not ready to say goodbye: Gilchrist

Source: smh.com.au - November 18, 2006

Any thoughts that the Ashes may be a swan song for ageing members of the Australian side are wide of the mark, says Adam Gilchrist.

Instead, Gilchrist said the team labelled "Dad's Army" had talked about fighting on.

"At the moment the talk from everyone is to keep playing, we all enjoy it, and we feel like we are maintaining standards that are required of the Australian cricket team," Gilchrist said.

"There has been no real talk of swan songs or grand finales, and it hasn't felt like that. But if and when we finish our careers, hopefully it is not all at the same time."

Many observers put England's dominance of Gilchrist at the crease as a major plank of their Ashes win last year. Since the first Test at Lord's, Gilchrist's batting average has declined 7 percentage points, although it still sits at an imposing 48.80.

But despite scoring only one hundred since then, Gilchrist rates that innings - 144 against Bangladesh in Fatullah in April - as one of his best, and a confidence booster ahead of next week's first Test in Brisbane.

"The keeping feels fantastic, but the batting, I haven't got the results in recent Test cricket," Gilchrist said. "Two Tests ago I got one of the best hundreds I have ever scored, which will forever and a day live in an unnoticed packet because it was Bangladesh in Bangladesh.

"History won't show how difficult that game was. But as a general rule, my results haven't been there, and that has been a little bit frustrating. But … I am sure I can deliver whatever the team needs, when we need it.

"Whether that means living up to the results and statistics I have got before I am not sure. I am still certain I can deliver what the team requires.

"Our confidence is there as a group, notwithstanding the challenges each individual has got to be right and ready to go on day one [of the first Test at the Gabba]. I think we have great momentum."
