Adam Gilchrist reminded Australia what they have been missing as he returned from his two-match break to take over the captaincy from the absent Ricky Ponting and hit a match-winning 116 against Sri Lanka. His innings in Perth helped Australia reach their target of 234 with exactly nine overs in hand to record a comfortable six-wicket victory in the latest VB Series match.
The target would have been more modest had Sri Lanka not recovered from a slow start. Half-centuries from Mahela Jayawardene and Russel Arnold were the key in moving Sri Lanka to 233 for eight. Chaminda Vaas, taking over the captaincy duties from the injured Marvan Atapattu, had won the toss so it was still a disappointing total from his side, who were 27 for three after 10.3 overs.
The fourth-wicket partnership of 121 from the next 26 overs between Jayawardene (69) and Arnold (56) stabilised an innings that was faltering. Brett Lee and Stuart Clark did most of the damage for the the home team, snaring two wickets each, but it was Andrew Symonds' brilliant fielding that stood out throughout.
The all-rounder instigated three run-outs with Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Nuwan Kulasekera all victims. Symonds also took the wicket of Jayawardene when the batsman failed with an attempted sweep and Glenn McGrath caught him. A run-a-ball contribution of 35 from Dilshan and a cameo 22 from 25 balls from the debutant Chamara Kapugedera were the highlights of the last 15 overs of the Sri Lankan innings.
Sri Lanka needed an early breakthrough but Gilchrist and Simon Katich plundered an opening stand of 191 in 32.2 overs. Gilchrist brought up his century, including 11 fours and four sixes, before Muttiah Muralitharan finally had him caught and bowled.
Brad Hodge made only two runs before edging Dilhara Fernando to Kumar Sangakkara behind the wicket, and Katich was then bowled by Vaas after reaching a battling score of 82. Symonds, who made five, was the next to fall but the flurry of wickets came far too late for Sri Lanka. Damien Martyn, with an unbeaten 14 and Michael Clarke, with six not out, ensured an easy finish for Australia.
