Gilchrist says big score around the corner

Source: ABC Sport - December 23, 2005

Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist is confident of reversing his recent form slump during the second cricket Test against South Africa, starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

Gilchrist has had a wretched run with the bat since the Ashes tour of England, during which he averaged 22.

He averaged just 17 in the recent three-Test series against the West Indies, and made scores of 3, 8 and a duck on the one-day tour of New Zealand.

Gilchrist admitted he was down on confidence heading into the first Test against South Africa in Perth, but was heartened by his score of 44 in the second innings.

"Started to feel alright the other day in the middle, got past 10 which was nice, hadn't done that in a couple of months," he said.

"A little of bit feeling coming back into there and it's just nice to get a bit of an opportunity to bat for a while."

Gilchrist said he felt a big score was just around the corner.

"Probably your confidence drops a little bit when you miss out a few times and I had done that in the previous two Test matches, obviously in New Zealand I missed out too," he said.

"It had been a little while since I'd made any significant score, so you've just got to keep believing and I haven't broken through with a big one yet but certainly it feels like it's in the right direction."
