Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist was back to his explosive best at the SCG yesterday, breaking two bats on his way to a whirlwind knock of 86.
The Australian vice-captain, who has had a lean trot since the start of the Ashes tour, belted 10 fours and two sixes to rescue his team from a perilous 7/226 in pursuit of South Africa's 9/451 declared.
Again Australia's tail wagged when it needed to, with Stuart MacGill (29) and Glenn McGrath (one not out in 34 minutes) helping Gilchrist add 96 runs for the last two wickets.
In his past three knocks in Tests on the SCG, Gilchrist has made 113, 94 and 86.
His power was too much for the South African bowlers - and also took its toll on the willow.
He had to change bats three times and he was getting through them at such a rate that the dressing room found it hard to keep up.
"I think he broke two and then the one they took back out the third time was the first one he broke - he ended up with another broken one," captain Ricky Ponting said.
"It doesn't really worry Gilly too much. He could bat with a stump or a baseball bat or something. It doesn't bother him."
Gilchrist, who started 2005 with three consecutive Test hundreds, has not scored a century since.
His average has dropped below 50 for the first time since early in his career.
